I never stay near the airport.
Try the Hampton Inn in Coconut Grove. It's affordable usually and close to the Grove, Downtown, Key Biscayne and Coral Gables somewhat.
You'll have lots of food and nightlife choices.
I love the Grove. If high end clubs are your thing you'll want to visit South Beach.
Flanigans is my favorite low key place for wings and sports bar food there. It's at the edge of the Grove near the hotel I mentioned. Lokal for great burgers in the Grove as well. You can walk around the grove and hit lots of bars.
Joes Stone Crabs is worth the trip.
There are so many options there it's crazy. Good food all around you.

I lived in the Grove for 9 months following Katrina, and I agree with this rec. Also, to echo what others are saying, traffic in Miami is horrific, so try to avoid driving a lot and allow yourself extra time when you do drive....
