No, it doesn't. There are no light tricks or weight sensors. As said, there is a an electrical loop placed in the road. If you look, you will see a rectangular shape where the black is darker than the road. That is where the loop is located. If you pull past that or stop before it, the loop will not sense you being there. Also, it often doesn't pick up motorcycles, especially smaller ones. If it doesn't sense anything, that just means you have to wait the full time of the red light which is known as a cycle.

A lot of intersections have cameras mounted near the signal light to detect vehicles. They are never the same cameras used for citations; those cameras are located at corners. Cameras do not detect bright lights either. These have multiple squares programmed into their views to detect large "blocks."
