NBA Realignment Proposal: National and American Conferences

Similar to MLB and NFL, this would split teams into conferences, meaning two wests, two centrals and two eastern divisions. People have mentioning traveling being an issue but it doesn't seem to be a problem in baseball playoffs. I think it could be a way to make things more even instead of all west in one bracket and all east in another bracket, and you would still have meaningful division games that wouldn't matter as much as with a 16 team playoff bracket.
Here's something I put together in a few minutes that looks more even. You're going to have divisions better than others but the conferences seem to be a lot more even, not just now but down the road if the east returns to dominance.
National Basketball Conference
East
Toronto
Washington
New York
Atlanta
Orlando
Central
OKC
Memphis
Chicago
Milwaukee
Minnesota
West
LA Lakers
Portland
Golden St
Denver
Phoenix
American Basketball Conference
East
Boston
Brooklyn
Philly
Charlotte
Miami
Central
Houston
New Orleans
Cleveland
Indiana
Detroit
West
LA Clippers
Sacramento
San Antonio
Utah
Dallas
For example, if you looked at teams this year you could have a conference with Portland, Golden State, OKC, Chicago, Memphis, Toronto, Washington and Phoenix making the playoffs and then Miami, Houston, Cleveland, New Orleans, Clippers, San Antonio, Dallas and maybe Sacramento. Seems a lot more balanced this way. Thoughts?

How about a realignment where we try to keep consistency across different pro sports.
I would love for the Saints to be in a division with but not excluded to:
Falcons
Panthers
Texans
And the Pelicans to be in a division with but not excluded to:
Hawks
Hornets
Rockets
That would be fricking awesome.

Are they not split into conferences now??

Good concept. Gotta keep the Rockets in the same division as the Spurs and Mavs though.
I could see the Pelicans in a Southern division with the Hawks, Grizzlies, and Hornets.

What's the point? Any conference realignment you do for the sake of parity could easily end up just as unbalanced 10 years from now. If you're gonna change things to get the best teams into the playoffs, just get rid of conferences period. There's no reason for arbitrary conferences at all. Either let the 16 best teams in or leave it as it is and wait for the east to naturally catch up.
