I wouldn't get a beginner a glass carboy. Stick with the bucket kit. Glass carboys are heavy and add an element of danger you don't need when you're already nervous about doing other stuff right.

What is generic yeast?

Personally, I'd start with dry yeast.

I agree with the poster about LA Homebrew. If you're in the BR area, it is definitely your best choice. And the owner isn't going to try to sell you stuff you don't absolutely need to get started.
