So Christmas Vacation couldn't have been about Thanksgiving or family coming in for a wedding?
No - because a big part is this entire mystique built around the "perfect Christmas" holiday, plus the friction over Clark's Christmas bonus, many of the scenes are involved in/around snow - selecting the Griswold family Christmas tree, the sledding, Clark and the Christmas lights, etc. - the movie was too intertwined in the holiday itself.
Although, I'll agree it was pretty secular - no supernatural, although Santa and the Reindeer flew at the end -
