People "care" because they have every advantage imaginable and are sucked off like the NYT sucks off democrats and they still have been irrelevant nationally for almost all of the last 2+ decades.
It's exactly like the cowboys still having more national games than anybody even though they are 8-8 every year.

Well if that teams fans has more TV sets of course they get more coverage regardless of how good they are.
