When I worked at Los Alamos National Lab many of the scientist were exactly as you are describing. More than once we had to save them from accidentally killing themselves.

So true! You easily alternate between thinking "Thank God our country has this guy on our side," and "What the hell was he thinking?"
I watched one such chap knock himself out cold by walking full bore into a F-15 radome.
