Just finished the first season and I'm wondering if there are any essential episodes from the original run that I should go back and watch before continuing.
I was getting ready to answer in the affirmative but now that I think about it, there are no "essential" episodes.
Since you've started (I presume) at the beginning of the new series and are not surprised that someone other than Matt Smith is the Doctor, I guess you have at least heard about the concept of "regeneration" and what a Time Lord is, etc.
If not, you should be able to pick up the basics quickly by starting at the beginning of the new series.
If there is one original story that would come close to essential, I would say it's Genesis of the Daleks, as that fleshes out the origins of the Daleks (the Doctor's greatest enemies) and kind of retroactively foreshadows why there was a Time War between the Daleks and the Time Lords in the first place.

Now that I think of it, The Deadly Assasin (stupid title aside) is a good one as it really introduces the Time Lords in depth for the first time and fleshes out the Master and his motivations really well.
Not quite as essential as Genesis due to the fact that the Time Lords have been changed around a lot over the years and the primary trigger for the Master's actions in this episode and many following ones featuring him is apparently no longer valid.

Word I'll check that one out.
I get the regeneration and Daleks being evil but don't really understand how the timeline as the Doctor knew it changed. Is that gonna be explained/do the Daleks time travel too or is it just one of those things in time travel shows/movies that you have to not scrutinize too much
