Just basic elitism or is there a legitimate reason?

Elitism, they think they and their tradition is better then competing against the FCS. All of their other sports compete in the postseason play, Ivy fooball is stuck in the 1930s. I'm sure the teams would love to compete if their admin would let them.

In a roundabout way, this is true. But not because they think they are "too good" to play the FCS in football.

They don't want to legitimize football because they know it is a game they can't win.

Their answer is simply to redefine what is important, and for them that means "elite" sports like rowing, tennis, and lacrosse. So they will invest in those sports, and compete in those sports, because those sports match the image of the Ivies. They will not invest or compete in football because doing so would be to admit that they are playing the same game as Alabama, USC, Texas, Michigan, or Notre Dame.
