He couldn't keep the train going anyways because he wouldn't use kids as spare parts. But he also didn't have to blow it up. He could have taken over and brought it to a stop without killing everybody.

There are enough dead that they could have used parts from other train cars or fashioned parts from raw materials.

I forgot about the kids part but you are right. Just take over and stop the damn train. Wants to eat babies, won't work the kids though...
