I was a hardcore gamer by age 10 and I would know the difference and would've felt that my parents took the cheap way out.

Pop for the extra $100. You'll end up spending less money in the long term because he's going to want a Xbone eventually when all of his friends have one.

Right now the graphic differences are not negligible. It's as close as it'll ever be but anyone can see the difference.

In a year, when the game developers start to truly harness the new technology the difference will be much more pronounced. Might as well get the Xbone now and avoid doing this all over again next year.
