Louisiana: Local Elections

I was born and raised is rural Acadiana. One thing I've always found fascinating is how every candidate must run as a Democrat to win office in my parish. On statewide elections our area is trending Republican but you can't get elected dog catcher as a Republican locally. I know for a fact my state rep is a closest Republican and votes close to where our parish is philosophically.
