Had one of the first Outbacks and loved it. Best car I've owned. That said I can't justify buying a brand new anything. Save $15-20k and get a used.

Bought a 2004 model with 116k miles on it when my son was in college, he now has 260K on, zero issues, plans to buy another one if this one ever dies. He lives in the northwest were it seems like 8 out of 10 cars are Subarus.
