It does kick that's for sure but I never seem to notice this though as I'm watching the deer I just shot buckle and fall right over

35 Whelen is lethal. 180 gr/3100+fps at muzzle. Nothing primative about that. You can hunt damn near anything on the planet with that gun.
In regular season on a pretty day I'll carry my .308 that my grandfather built. For really long shots in cutover or whatnot I'll take the 300 WSM. But for nasty days or long treks the little CVA stainless/composite 35 Whelen is great.
