Because they want to text too but are scared to come across as needy/clingy/"beta".
I personally don't see the issue. To me I'll text first, but if I get short replies I get the message and stop worrying about it.

Oddly enough, same shite goes through female minds, and both people end up not texting and think the other isn't interested
