I think batting average is a very overrated stat. A walk is almost as good as a single. Extra base hits are what really makes a hitter valuable.

I actually have my own statistic that I use to measure players myself but I just went with the common ones for posting purposes. My stat incorporates total bases, walks, times hit by pitch, and net stolen bases. It is kind of skewed for these fall practices though because they have attempted steals more than normal just to practice and get a gauge for players' abilities-- plus I don't have accurate data for times caught stealing.

That's why OPS and OPS+ have become household stats, because they give a broader indication of a player's offensive production. Personally I favor OBP over all others.
