You seem smart, but you really don't understand the disease.
You are a binge drinker with blinders. You are so bad of a drunk that this woman you have dated since college is leaving. That's how bad the problem is right now. This means that you are a incredibly volitile human being with incredibly weak coping skills. You're in an incredibly high pressure profession and this problem will only grow. I think you need to quit just to show yourself that you can for 6 months and find some other outlets. If you can't quit then you need to get help. It seems as though drinking is a very important part of your life.
How do you feel about not being able to control your consumption when you drink? I know it use to scare the hell out of me! The things I said and did were aweful and embarassing. You were obviously abusive to this young lady. How does that make you feel?

This is someone that understands.
I feel terrible about what I've done, but it is what it is. I don't go out and get trashed when I have things to do for work. However, when I have the opportunity to cut loose I do.
ETA I have quit for months at a time to prove to myself I could... But I'm not going to quit all together. I just can't see myself living that life.
