The only way he opts out is if the Pelicans extend him. That way he knows the money is guaranteed. Otherwise his agent will tell him to wait. The most obvious thing that might happen is he opts out, then the Pelicans sign and trade him (to a team Gordon chooses). But Gordon has the power. Opting out before he has a deal in hand would be foolish and the only team he can negotiate with is the Pelicans.

Not really. His agent gets paid for signing deals.

His agent makes money on new deals, what is his motivation to wait a year? Especially when 2 of the bigger names in an already thin SG market are now off the list. And what few other big names are on it, Afflalo and Monta Ellis, are in situations where they probably will stay with their current team. His Agent will tell Gordon there is money out there for him and Gordon will believe it, just look at his seemingly ridiculous comments about his "tone setting role" with the Pelicans.

Gordon having a healthy and productive season is probably the most unlikely variable in the equation of things lining up to motivate him to opt out. The market will be ready for him if he's ready for it.
