Syfy (Sci-Fi in Reality) Admits Failures, Plans to Rebuild

Interesting comments coming out of an interview:

Uhhh yeah you did. One of the worst channel blunders in the past 10 years. TO be on the edge with something great like Battlestar and even Caprica, and then to squander it all to aim for...
Was crap. SyFy's demise was one of the main reasons I never missed cable.
Boom. That's harsh but true. It's a tough lesson to learn but arguably the two most popular shows would be more at home on the Sci-Fi network.
I also did not know that Comcast owns Sci-Fi...blah.
Anyways, article here:

"We saw an explosion of sci-fi/fantasy content across every cable and broadcast network out there," said Syfy president Dave Howe. "Perceptions of the genre have shifted dramatically. What that speaks to is an opportunity to re-own the genre and be at the forefront of high-end buzzy, provocative storytelling — and the epiphany of that was Battlestar."

Broad-targeted female-friendly fantasies like Twilight and Harry Potter were dominating the box office while breezy crime dramas on USA and TNT ruled cable. So Syfy doubled down on light, sci-fi-themed procedurals.

Yet while Syfy was seeking TV’s version of Twilight (like Being Human), or an “Imagine Greater” version of Burn Notice (like Warehouse 13), other channels jumped into the serialized hard sci-fi/fantasy turf trail-blazed by Battlestar. AMC’s The Walking Dead—a premise that nobody in the industry thought would deliver a broad audience—became TV’s highest-rated series. HBO enjoyed huge hits with True Blood and Game of Thrones. FX unleashed American Horror Story, and A&E got in the game with Bates Motel.

Being Human was actually good...very dark and gritty....
And they canceled it.
And they canceled it.

I'm still pissed at Syfy for canceling Alpha's.
That was just plain stupid on their part.

Someone actually thought that doing a knockoff of Burn Notice was the way to go?

I'm not exactly sure how Warehouse 13 is considered a Burn Notice knockoff by this author. It's more like The Librarian movies crossed with X-Files IMO.

Can't say I've ever watched a single show on Syfy.

I blame SGU.
They claim it had the largest budget ever, but all of that money went into the producers / actors pockets because none of it was on the screen. 3 alien encounters spread over 2 years.
Still refuse to call them Sci-Fi. See.

While I'm excited for the new shows I will miss the fun, lighthearted sci-fi shows like Eureka and Warehouse 13.
And of course Alphas.

Bring back MST3K on Saturday mornings and we're good.

I'm surprised Alphas was cancelled while Haven persists.

Walking Dead would not be as popular as it is if it was on Syfy. I give any show that AMC does a shot because AMC puts out quality shows, like HBO. If Syfy put out a show that was currently on AMC I probably wouldn't give it a chance. Imagine if Battlestar Gallactica were an AMC show, it would have been more huge than it was.

Was coming here to post this
Also find Joe Bob Briggs and give him another Friday night show like he had with MonsterVision on TNT.

quote:Doubt it. BSG had quality effects and acting so I call BS it would have been better on AMC. Not like AMC has some massive pile of money for budgets.

I'm all for more syfy original TV series (excited for Helix s2) but they better never cancel Face-Off.

I loved monster vision as a young teen in the 90s, especially when there was a Friday the 13th, they went all out.
On another subject makes me miss "USA Up all night", on Fridays and Saturday's. Those cheesy B movies and nothing but phone sex commercials in between segments.
Guys like us, we had it made. Those were the days.

Warehouse 13 was great.
Alphas was great.
I feel like they can handle having some light and dark shows at the same time. Doesn't have to be so black/white.

The Drive-In totals at the end of the night
Twelve dead bodies. Exploding house. One four-barreled sawed-off shotgun. Dwarf tossing. Ten breasts. Embalming needles plunged through various parts of various bodies. One motor-vehicle chase, with crash-and-burn. Ear-lopping. Forehead-drilling. Wrist-hacking. Bimbo-flinging. Grandma-bashing. Devil sex. Crematorium Fu. Flamethrower Fu ... Four stars. Check it out."
The Hammer Dracula weekends were awesome too.
to those days.

There is 100+ years of science fiction material - from the greatest sources that have been largely untapped - fictionalized Jules Verne has been done, but that could be done well - like a Dr. Who or Quantum leap storyline.
Lovecraft? A channel devoted to science fiction could do great things with that universe - dark, scary, violent.
The Foundation series by Asimov? A wonderful universe in which to create a dramedy around a futuristic problem solving team.
Michael Moorcock's Multiverse? Trickier to implement, but he's never been adverse to trying a film medium - particularly Elric - if done correctly, it could rival LOTR or GoT.
A Star Trek series set at Starfleet Academy? That would allow you to target the demographic of 20-somethings and push a lot of good looking gals in skin-tight uniforms.
I mean, what do I know, right? I'm just an uneducated hick from Loosyana.
