I will say this, every single film in The Dark Knight Trilogy can function, more or less, on its own. You don't really need to see Batman Begins before you watch The Dark Knight and you don't really need to watch the first two to understand The Dark Knight Rises. The Avengers on the other hand relies on the universe set up by the films that came before it. A person watching The Avengers before seeing the other MCU films that came before it will not be able to appreciate the movie fully. My parents were confused coming out of The Avengers because neither of them had seen any of the MCU films after the first Iron Man. Also the emotional spark of the movie, the death of Coulson, only resonates if you had seen the MCU films that came before it. Even then, when he died, despite the fact I had seen all of the movies, I really didn't care.
The Dark Knight Rises, for all its faults, is the better film. The Avengers might be more entertaining, but TDKR is better overall.

Apples and oranges.
Film vs movie.
Film vs movie.

I agree with this.
TDKR is a a better film with a lot of flaws. Avengers is a pretty entertaining movie that nailed it in all aspects.
I own both and don't buy many hero DVDs.
If I could only see either one of them ever again one last time I'd see TDKR. If I could only watch one as many times as I wanted from head to eternity I'd choose the Avengers.

Except if you start w/TDKR you're going to wonder why the hell Batman is being such a baby about some random woman you've never even heard of instead of being a badass vigilante due to his parents murder. The Talia plot twist will emasculate Bane even more if you don't at least know who Ra's was.
