I think the idea was to prevent a decent return. Had one of the Kentucky players fallen on it, they probably would have just run out the clock.
I doubt it was supposed to hit the field as early as it did though. It risked one of the more up-field players fielding it.

This. I cannot understand why everyone is acting like this is first squib kick they've ever seen. It wasn't planned to be quite so short, but just like plenty of teams do at the end of a half/game the whole point is to keep the ball out of their returner's hands. A team down a couple scores is MUCH more likely to try and bring it out of the endzone, and then anything can happen.
