My question is, why is all of this bussing necessary? Why can't the kids just go to whatever school is in their neighborhood? If the EBR public schools are such good schools, then they should be the same quality across the board, and it shouldn't matter which school they attend.

Of course, we know that isn't the case.

You wrote yesterday that you are relatively new to Baton Rouge so I understand that you don't have much knowledge of the geography and demographics of EBR.

The short answer to your question is, students DO go to their neighborhood schools for the most part. But some parts of the city and parish don't have schools in their neighborhood. That's especially true of high schools and students who choose to attend a gifted or magnet school and for high school students who live near Lee High which is under reconstruction.

Here is a website that shows the 'feeder' pattern for schools. You can see that most schools are populated from their nearby neighborhoods. At least you can if you're familiar with the neighborhoods in East Baton Rouge Parish. LINK

If you have specific knowledge of a student who is being bussed past a neighborhood school in order to attend a school further away (other than to attend a magnet or gifted program), please post the specifics. I'd really like to know about it.
