The "neighborhood school" approach, which I championed for years, is NOT the correct one, IF YOU LIVE IN A GHETTO. There has to be a way to get the good, deserving kids out of the impossible environment of their ghetto peers and into a safe learning environment. As much as this offends sensibilities, when you are dealing with the kids EBRPS has to deal with, the best approach may be to adopt a wider two-tiered approach.
Further warehouse the incorrigibles/shitheads who screw things up for their classmates, and let the good kids who want to learn get on a bus and go to a decent school. There are so many great students coming out of the worst neighborhoods, and those are the kids that truly need some kind of opportunity. EBRPS has actually addressed their needs pretty well with the magnet/gifted programs. And they are left with thousands of other kids who are just academically hopeless and then condemned for not magically transforming them.
