I drove a jalopy in college, and was pulled over various times in all kinds of dress (i.e., basketball shorts/flatbill, cowboy hat/boots, ROTC uniform, etc), and still never had a problem.
It really comes down to being cordial, complying with their (usually) reasonable requests, and going about your business. In my experience, anyway.

I get fricked with whenever I'm pulled over but I know the spiel (and my rights), so luckily I've never been really put over the fire. I also don't transport more than I can eat, which I have had to do a few times.
