Stage 1: Panic sets in.

Stage 2: Water and supplies are purchased.

Stage 3: CNN is watched.

Stage 4: Nothing happens.

Stage 5: Wal-Mart and CNN report record profits.

CNN being watched occurs first.

You also forgot to have this between CNN being watched and Water and Supplies are Purchased:

Step 3: CNN reports a lot of false information resulting in increased panic.

Stage 4: Nothing happens.
Yep.

Stage 5: Wal-Mart and CNN report record profits.

I'm so old I can remember when CNN was telling us civilization was going to end as we knew it at midnight on December 31, 1999: all public utilities would cease to work, airplanes would fall from the sky as their on-board computers froze up and our automobiles wouldn't start.

I was working in Moscow in December, 1999 and I had a very bright young Russian engineer ask me in a panicked voice what was I doing to prepare for the catastrophe of Y2K. I said, "Nothing."

He said, "Schto???" ("What???")

I repeated, "Nothing. It's going to be a none event." He walked away shaking his head.

I saw him again in mid-January. He grinned sheepishly and said, "You were right."

I said, "I know."
