From the standpoint of an individual who lives in a state that has not had a case of Ebola and who cannot do anything to affect whether or not it spreads, no, there is nothing to worry about.

I can have an opinion on whether or not politically we are doing the things we need to do. People don't need to have direct control over something to be concerned about it.

My concern is not that I, or my family, will walk out the door today and come back with Ebola tonight. My concern is that we are heading to a reality where there will be a significant number of infections across the country. I'm concerned about whether or not we can handle that...whether or not it will negatively affect the healthcare system as a whole, and of course whether or not there becomes an immediate danger to my family and friends.

Until then, everyone's fears are more disruptive and destructive than this "outbreak" is.

How are people who reflect my concern above disruptive and/or destructive?

I won't call you destructive, but everyone going around saying how big a deal this might be is contagious. The last thing we need is people flooding the health system with false alarms and buying up medical resources and whatnot on the general market.

That said, I do agree that your concern regarding the impact on our healthcare system is similar to mine. I really don't anticipate an outbreak, but 50 cases, the way we handle them, will inspire a public freakout and use up tons of medical resources that may result in dropping the ball on other things (flu?).

Because with the flu season approaching, every individual with fever, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea who talked to a black guy within the past year wil flood every health center in this country with complaints of "I gots da 'bola!"

The more this situation is played up and the more fear-mongering that occurs, the worse it'll get.

I will bet you that more people die of the flu in the US this year than Ebola.
