I definitely can see that as a reason. But, then again, the average New Yorker doesn't care about college football. There's just something about the reporting that strikes me as tone-deaf. Nothing I read in that article is terribly different from the relationship between football, the local economy, and the police departments in Ann Arbor, Madison, State College, or any number of university towns.
I suppose if they had used Tallahassee as an example of a larger issue pertaining to college athletics, and not implied that it's an isolated case, I would trust the NY Times's motives more.
