This is the wrong question on many levels.

First, what is a "spread offense QB"?

Does this mean some who runs a "spread option" like Arizona or Oregon? A QB who tends to run the ball a lot each game? These QBs are usually called Dual-Threat QBs, and they tend to run better than they throw.

Or does this mean someone who runs a "spread pass offense" like an air raid, a fun-and-gun, or a run-and-shoot. A QB who tends to throw the ball a lot each game? These QBs are sometimes called Dual-Threats (depending on the particular variant), but they tend to throw better than they run.

LSU tends to recruit the latter and not so much the former.

Second, LSU attempts to recruit and sign QBs who are good passers with a preference for good passers who can run.

LSU hasn't recruited QBs who would only succeed in a "spread option" offense. LSU has recruited "spread pass offense" QBs. Brandon Harris and Anthony Jennings are both throwers first and runners second.

Brandon Harris was labeled a Dual-Threat QB by 247, Rivals, and ESPN. However, he has as much arm as any Pro-Style QB.

Jennings was labeled a Pro-Style QB by 247 and a Dual-Threat QB by Rivals and ESPN. He won a regional Elite 11 QB competition and participated in the national Elite 11 competition.

For the record, I don't recall Rettig taking any snaps from under center while in high school. You would probably call his offense a spread offense.

The point being that LSU recruits QBs who can throw. It helps if they can run too.

Why couldn't Hayden Rettig be convinced to stay and develop?

It was communicated to Rivers and Rettig that our O was going in a different direction for which their skill set wasn't a good fit.

So why did we recruit them in the first place? From what I've seen so far our O isn't that QB run-centric.

And as for it taking multiple seasons to transition from whatever O we were running to something different, there are numerous examples of coaches installing new systems in a single spring-fall season.

Until Les puts the '08 int fest in his rear-view mirror our O will rarely operate near capacity regardless of who's under center or how we line up.
