The one in my avi pic is a '97. It is automatic and I have no issues with the transmission both on and off-road. Routine maintenance is what you can expect - having to change some things out but with almost 100K miles that is to be expected. A bit of a rough ride but fun as hell to drive.
I owned a IH Scout growing up and I could not fault that or the older land cruisers as options.
