everyone in those threads has an insane theory and wanted to jerk off to being right about thay theory (even though 90 percent of those theorys were ripped straight from reddit)
when noone was right it turned into all the Theory Fanboys all coming together and shitting on the show because it made them look stupid.

The show ended up being about the characters and their lives. The mystery just gave context. Were people expecting some great magical underground ring to be exposed? There was enough closure to the mystery for the characters to complete their journey. They got their killer. They weren't going to change the world.
