Why did the first down runs work so well?

We seemed to run the ball very well on first down. I was kind of surprised because I would have thought Auburn would have been looking for that and stuffed it. I always figured passing early would soften up the front of the defense.
I've seen different opinions on what formations we ran on 1st down. Some have said it was more spread out and that helped the running. Some have said it was 2 tight ends. I hate to say it but I don't really remember. Did we spread out more on 1st downs?
Other possibilities I guess are that Auburn for some reason expected us to pass on 1st downs. Or that the line was blocking better and executing on 1st downs. Or the running backs so the holes better.
I know about the terrible problems on 2nd and 3rd downs. But I wanted to get a little insight into why 1st downs seemed to go well.

I don't know, but I remember seeing a graphic(not sure at point in the game) that said 107 of the 108 yards of offense came on 1st down

It was amazing. Every single drive would start with a solid gain, giving me such hope every time. AU had to know the first down play would be a run everytime too.

AUs D is not as stout upfront as State.

I think the better question is why couldn't we build on that success on 2nd and 3rd downs?

Not sure but it must have been in the play book to get away from the run if it's working.

Hannegriff said that Auburn only had 5 or 6 in the box on 1st down, but then had 8 on 2nd and 3rd down.

That could explain it. Perhaps we can run effectively against 5 or 6 man fronts.

Auburn also thought LSU was going to come out in the spread

Ya mean, we actually were unpredictable and tricked 'em? Or they just didn't watch much game film?
