So this past weekend we had some family in from out of town for a visit. The group included my four sweet little nieces, ranging in age from 3 to 8. Well, un-beknownst to me, the five year old decided to play DJ with my Rega Planar 3/Rega Exact cartridge.
Earlier in the afternoon Friday, I had been fooling around with the settings on my preamp (Schiit Mani), and got pulled away. Well, I left an LP on the platter (Disc 1, Side one of the Best of Eva Cassidy), and the dust cover off - I normally don't leave the dustcover on, but had planned to put it on for the weekend to discourage little hands. My bad!
Well, the sweet little 5 year old found her way into that room, and from the looks of the record, tried to draw on it with the tonearm. Her dad (my brother-in-law) discovered and promptly brought it to my attention and told me he had already ordered a new copy of the LP and was having it sent to me, stand-up guy. Well, later I go to more closely inspect the damage, and drop the needle on that LP to survey the damage. Immediately, I can tell something is bad wrong. Long story a bit shorter, her DJ session ripped the stylus off of the cantilever. Damn, $600 cartridge down the drain (luckily for me I didn't pay that, or the pain of this episode would have been much greater).
So, I had several cartridges on my want list including Hana E, Dynavector 10x5, Ortofon 2M Black or Bronze or perhaps replace the Rega Exact. Well, I couldn't or wouldn't make up my mind and pull the trigger, so for (nearly) immediate gratification, I ordered a Nagaoka MP-110 for USD126 via Amazon Prime. Well, I got it this evening, put it on, aligned it, cranked it up, and will say I am awfully impressed. Can't believe how nice it sounds for under $150. So now I am afforded with the luxury of time to read and obsess on what my permanent replacement is going to be, but at first blush, I am going to say this little gem compares very favorable to the Rega Exact which liked a whole lot.

I did almost that exact same thing to my dad's turntable when I was about 5---I took around 10 LPs off the shelf and played "scrub the floor" with them!...he forbade me from touching his stuff again until I was like 28 or something.
Which is why I started at a young age with my own gear.
Glad to hear you are still at it and building up a nice rig..I've been meaning to drop you a line and see how the process is going.

I have a Nagaoka MP-200. Great cartridge. I used it on my Rega RP-6 for a while. Now it is on a Yamaha TT and it sounds fantastic. I'm using a Denon Dl-110 on the Rega right now and it is a great match.
