The Ocean,
Here are some pics of my steamer...
You can hold the nozzle just a half inch above the record and won't harm it--I promise!
I usually work the entire LP surface from the outer edge to the inner edge--I don't go in circles like the needle would ride, but outer to inner in sections, turning the record a quarter turn and then work on another section. It is easier to turn the record and keep the steamer in place--it is easy to topple the steamer--water doesn't come out, but it can be cumbersome at times.
Once you do a few, you will come up with your own geeky method.
Just use a damp square kitchen sponge to absorb the excess DISTILLED WATER off the record surface.
To dry, use something soft and lint free--like a cloth baby's diaper.
Just put a dish towel under the record and steam away!
