The main purpose of a "phono stage" is to re-apply, through RIAA equalization curve, the low and high frequencies that were compressed in the lacquer mastering so all the music info could fit into the groove. If that weren't done, the groove would be 4 times as wide and you would only get about six minutes per side max.
