The Oscar season now starts even earlier than it used to, and the first major contender is released this weekend in Gone Girl. Over the next few weeks Whiplash, Kill the Messenger, Fury, Birdman, and Nightcrawler will hit the theaters with Oscar buzz surrounding the films.
So before everything starts, what is your top 10 movies of the first 9 months of 2014?
I've only watched 55 movies so far this year, but Ive seen almost all of the big releases.

Really want to see Calvary. It's right up my alley as an Irish Catholic (mom was born there).
Saw Gone Girl. It deserves it, but I bet it gets screwed.

Would never put captain America there. Same formula as all the other comic movies. Thought transformers was better.

Damn, I wish I had time to catch all those films.
Right now, I'd say in no particular order
The Rover
Joe
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Chef
I'll stop there. In the next couple of weeks I should catch Calvary, Frank, Zero Theorem, and a few others.
I would love to put CA, Guardians and Edge of Tomorrow all in my top 10, but the film buff in me says no. Add Robocop to that which was surprisingly not bad.

I liked GotG but I don't see it being a contender at all

I liked Boyhood a lot, but for a movie that was otherwise so good, I don't see why Linklater needed to interject Michael Moore-ish, juvenile political commentary into it. The scene with them stealing McCain signs was so shallow and aimed to please the dumbest people in the audience.
It also annoyed me that the kid drove himself to college 500 miles away and packed one suitcase...like that ever happens outside of the movies or tv.

I've seen 74 movies in the theater this year (some were repeat viewings).
Oscar contenders so far:
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Boyhood
Gone Girl
Movies that I'd hope would get nominated, but probably won't:
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Chef
The Drop
