Why are older British movies so much better than the remakes?

Scarlet Pimpernel, Wuthering Heights, Tale of Two Cities, and others.

I liked the remake of Bedazzled better than the British original. That's the only one I can think of though.

That's because it has Elizabeth Hurley in it.
And brendan frasier. But mainly Elizabeth Hurley.

She just has that special look in her eye, like she wants you to slather barbecue sauce all over them hooters.

Because British people make entertainment. Their characters take place in their own world. For some reason Americans reject this. We want the characters to be likable and relatable and we want the things they do to be acceptable and we like happy endings.

I'll try a simplify my theory as to why in a sentence or two. But I definitely agree with you. Because British film (and classic film) in general make it about the product (the film). Whereas today, especially America, actors & film personnel make it about them 1st and the product 2nd. Which ultimately creates an inferior product.
