A senior Russian Foreign Ministry official says that Moscow has a responsibility to protect ethnic Russian citizens of other countries, "regardless of where they live," and that "we will do everything possible to defend the rights and interests" of ethnic Russian minorities in the neighboring Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

"We are carrying out a line so that Russian compatriots regardless of where they live are guaranteed all rights and freedoms ... and have the opportunity to preserve the culture and traditions of their historical Motherland," Makarov said, explicitly extending this to the million-plus ethnic Russians who are citizens of Baltic countries.

Of course the Baltics are all in NATO. The question is does Putin care about that?

I think we should defer to the European NATO members on European matters. If they don't care, we shouldn't care. That's the same way I feel about ISIS and the Arab/Muslim world.

YOU NOT CARE, WE NOT CARE.

Serious question - if what Ruskie posted is true and the ruble is really about to collapse, would that make Putin more incentivized to NGAF and go ahead and invade?

Then once he has control of these nations he would be in the catbird seat to negotiate a financial aid deal/settlement. Seems like a cornered bear is the most dangerous.

Mr. President, the 1980s called again, it said you need to call the 1930s too.

How's that "Reset" button working out for us now, Obama-bots?

All this and the person who actually handed the Reset button to them is going to be the next POTUS.

When will we learn?

US Sends 'Ironhorse' Tanks To NATO's Nervous Baltic Front Line

(Reuters) - U.S. troops and tanks will deploy across the three Baltic states and Poland in the next two weeks on a mission designed to deliver an unmistakeable message of NATO resolve to Moscow.

The "Ironhorse" armored cavalry unit, with around 700 soldiers, some 20 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks with Bradley and Stryker armored fighting vehicles, is one of the most formidable U.S. military forces to be sent onto former Soviet soil. Several of the bases and training areas it will operate from were built for the old Soviet Red Army.

The aim is to convince Moscow that - unlike in non-NATO Ukraine - any Russian interference in Lithuania, Latvia or Estonia would put it at war with the Western alliance.

Yes, he cares. The political calculus he performs might lead him to conclude that NATO will do nothing in response to Russian acts of war, but he at least has to weigh the risks that NATO will respond.

If NATO lives up to its principles and all members mobilize there is no way that Russia could prevail in a war fought with conventional weapons. Russia would be looking at a multiple front war fought against economies that dwarf its own.

We should have sent defensive weapons to the Ukrainians so that they could have defended themselves against this thug.
