Imagine how great Drew could be if every defense was a little worn down or constantly looking at the run. Many fans this season that watch every down can call the plays from the couch. If we can do that, the defensive coordinators paid millions on the opposing sidelines have already gameplanned for it.

Then, in the second half, unleash Brees.

If your ahead and "wearing em down" with the run in the 1st half as you say why in the world would anyone "unleash Brees". Risk sacks turnovers quick 3 and outs etc? I'll pass pun intended.

No doubt his play calling or someone's is bad this year. Both sides of the ball.

I've always believed in go with whats working till they stop it. But this has never been CSP MO sadly. Till they let me in the film room thats all I got.

We have the 3rd highest blitz % in the league this year

That's insane. And if it's true, we never blitz on situations when we need to.

That's only a small part of it, the most annoying thing about our blitzes under Ryan is they aren't disguised. The LBs walk to the line so obviously it's almost like they are trying to show blitz to the offense to fake them out. Problem is it just is a blitz, so the QB just makes a blocking adjustment, or audibles to a slant, and rolls with it.

Another thing those blitz plays are almost always interior gap blitzes. When the line knows you're coming that's the most ineffective blitz style you can ever ask for.

Bunkley has been a mediocre player since he became a Saint, so he's no surprise.

Big reason we are losing the LOS. Pretty much 1-on-1 blocking on all of our DLinemen this year. Your Nose has to draw a double team the majority of the time for this scheme to work. When you force a Center and Guard to doubleteam a DT, you essentially close a gap, which reduces the burden on your MLB. Then solid play on the inside by your MLB allows your OLBs to play better. In our case, Gallete when lined up next to a disruptive player like Hicks (who can almost take two blocks himself) you create the disruptions on that side of the line.

This is pretty much the start of our problems on defense this year. If your Line and the Backers aren't stopping the run, your safeties are going to play more timid and not make plays.

This is why we desperately need someone like Dontari Poe who can draw those double teams 95% of the time.

His numbers and playing level are very good, especially considering the piss poor performances by the oline and receivers.

I certainly like the idea.
But the Cowboys are doing it successfully because they have a badass OL.

I feel like if we try to pound the rock with our OL, the backs will never even get to the second or third levels.
That's not gonna tire the other team out.

The Cowboys line is great, but our guys have been pretty damn good at run-blocking...think we 4th or 5th rushing before this game, now we're 11th...probably would be a lot higher if it wasn't 24-0 at half.

...it's not so much the O-line that's been the problem, but the O-line pass blocking, imo.

Heard a writer say he had a source that told him that he has gained a ton of weight. Apparently the torn peck had him out of commission so long that he just ballooned. He is very out of shape and it's taking a while to get back to playing shape.
Thanks for this info.

I've been dying to hear anything about the J Jenkins situation.
And hearing that he gained weight due to injury is a hell of a lot better than him being inactive due to sucking worse than the other bums in the middle of the line.

Good thread. Hoodoo

Breezus, we are all frustrated. Your assessment of drew is too cynical.

Some of the other stuff looks about right though.

Most people feel like this team goes as Brees goes. While I feel like this is mostly true, I feel like like there's a subset to that.

This team will, as long as Brees is around, go as both him and our guards go. Right now, are guards are underperforming for the money they're getting paid.

While our line isn't as bad as New England's, I feel like the offense problems stem from the same source, a bad offensive line from the interior.

Our tackles aren't great either, but if our guards are substandard that will destroy this team quicker than anything else.

We aren't very good at being the hunted. Now that we are being the hunter things will change. It's maybe a simple reason but it's just that simple

The week 4 rankings reflect the PFF stats - lots of red on defense:

Offense:
3rd total
3rd passing
9th rushing
15th scoring
7th in passer rating

Defense:
30th total
29th pass
23rd rush
28th scoring

(rankings posted are subtly aimed at Breesus criticality of Brees)

we MUST commit to the running game on the road. I think that helps move the chains on offense.

On defense? no fricking idea what to do other than do something different. Its pretty clear what were doing isnt working.

The early three and outs and quick stalls and empty backfileds are killing this team on both sides of the ball.

This is very true.

Every game I've watched this season (with the exception of the Atlanta game), our offense can't get shite going until they've had multiple possessions.

the only reason this is important is because we cant stop anyone on defense and by the time we do get going were down 14 or more.

Also, how many times have we seen the guys blitzing running into the back of the D line. There have been so many replays where the Oline is using 2 people to block 3 rushers and the QB has all day to pass.
