People are going for blood on a youthful indiscretion.
How is costing him thousands of dollars going to help him be a better person? People in the US are getting where they want harsh punishments on everyone, but themselves.
When this kid gets out in the real world this incident will be his first google result for any employer. This is going to hurt him, long term. A lot of young people have done more stupid things and not been body slammed on camera and lost a year of scholly over it.
A proportional response would be some community service with an official apology.
