Using your logic we should take seatbelts and airbags out of cars because they make people feel safe and drive recklessly.
That is not the logic at all. no one adjusts their driving style based off of safety features.

I suspect concussions from the head contacting the ground would increase.

No body has argued for no safety features.
I just said to not make these invincible helmets that create an attitude of reckless abandonment when playing a contact sport.
No amount of safety features on a car can create a reckless abandonment attitude when dealing with a 2 ton car.

I think Georgia Tech is using something similar in practices. They might have developed the technology. Not sure about that one.
If it's the above, they didn't develop it. That's literally a scrum cap fastened to a helmet.

Leather helmets with some small spikes on the inside facing inward towards the wearer. That'd prevent spearing.
Posted on 10/1/14 at 11:40 am to inthemorning
You don't need leather helmets.
JoePa said years ago...we simply need to go back to having no facemask.
The facemask is everything...that's what gives everyone the feeling of invincibility.

JoePa might still be covering scandals up today, had he worn a facemask.

That was pretty lame.
Need to move on brah.

Dear lord, did you ever play football? I was poked in the eye, face scratched, and other various injuries WITH A FACEMASK.

If they went to leather helmets without face masks, players would actually tackle instead of just trying to go for a kill shot every play.
It would actually improve the product long term.
The problem with football today is that hardly anybody tackles.
No one wraps up. Its all hits.

Its what some hockey people called a 'gladiator mentality', that it was all about going for big hits. Not only would it make things safer it would also make the game more marketable because you'd actually be able to see these guys faces more. If anything it could make the NFL more marketing dollars.

Helmets were designed to stop skull cracking and it worked. Now we have a new issue we have discovered. I'm not so sure there is a right answer, football is just a violent game.
Posted on 10/1/14 at 12:57 pm to Mr Gardoki
Big people moving too fast. I don't think there is an answer. The brain isn't designed to change directions that fast.

quote:Sadly, this is the only route that will make sense. We can't eliminate the spear helmets because even if it changes technique for the better, it makes skulls more vulnerable to harmful incidental contact.
People just need to be penalised for not tackling and running correctly.
As unrealistic as it sounds, the only way to make football survive in the long term is for players to learn how to wear the current and future equipment while playing the game as if they aren't padded at all.

Has anyone watched rubgy?
A lot of the guys wear no headgear, others wear those World War II pilot-looking padded things on their head.
Maybe the NFL should opt for something like that. Or padded synthetic leather.
Or even use the current helmets (or a scaled-down version) without facemasks.
But the facemasks definitely need to go.
