If you enjoy reading about football from that era I highly suggest reading the book "Real All-Americans" about Carlisle College. Really interesting the things they had to go through. Has a lot of good information on Jim Thorpe.
One of the better stories in the books talks about a blown call. From what I remember (feel free to correct me if I misquote something) Carlisle, which was a school for Native Americans, was playing again one of the powers (I think Army). Carlisle had clearly made a first down and the official moved the ball almost 2 yards to prevent Carlisle from getting the first down and cost them the game.
After the game a reporter asked the Carlisle coach why he didn't argue over the call. The Carlisle coach replied "The white man has been taking thousands of acres of our land for years, you really expect me to get upset over a few inches?"

Everytime i see pictures of football from over 100 years ago i think to myself, the sport is only like 10 years old, in its infancy....why the hell are people there!?
"Hey mike, wanna go watch a sport a bunch of dudes made up last saturday?"

To be fair, by 1903, the game of football was over 30 years old. The first intercollegiate game was played between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869.

50,000 spectators for Princeton and Yale in 1903.
