I believe the current rate is 40% after the $10 million tax free exemption. The smart political move would be to try raise the 40% figure to 65% and keep the 10 million exemption so 99+% estates have no tax but super rich get hit. Without reading the article my guess is bernie wants no exemption and go with the 65% figure for everybody. The key is to follow the money. The super rich, folks above the exemption like to merge themselves with people in the 1-10 million range so they don't get hit with a tax. Yet, the lawyers and accountants who donate money to pols want a tax for more business.
