There might have been something going on when he ended up with the tranny in his car in 1997, but I don't think he had an extended run where he was working while high - he did come up in the 80s, and on SNL, so the potential is there. However, I don't think Eddie ever had a bad drug problem. Charlie talks about that in the Rick James stories.
If he did/does, he's kept it pretty quiet.

Eddie Murphy owned the 80s. Trading places was great too, and I loved the cameos in coming to America.
