There are 20 main story missions. I think you get the branding abiility about halfway through, but I'm not sure.
Theres a way to look at your progress through the various objectives (weapons legends, artifacts, outcast missions, etc) in the menu somewhere

I'm 13 out of 20. I just wasn't sure how long the last missions are.
