So our orbit is both a football and a basketball at the same time? How can that be?
Maybe in the first pic the orbital plane is altered just perfectly enough that, in a 2D representation, it appears circular.

Earth's orbit is slightly oval. Something like a 4M mile diff aphelion-perihelion. But I don't think either was necessarily trying to represent that. The second was intended to represent a slightly tangential POV.
Same orbit. Different perspective.
