I'm with Deacon on this one. If this hunt was just a "spur of the moment" type deal, he probably still won't be proficient enough to take an ethical shot.

If they've known about it all offseason, there was plenty of time to get comfortable with a compound bow. Hunting season is the same time of year, every year.

I've been practicing with mine since damn near April for the upcoming opener.

Edit: I just don't understand getting a crossbow for a capable 15 year old. Drawing on a deer within bow range is part of the thrill of bowhunting.
