I am right in the wake of that, I have ash raining down all day from white ash to large pieces of burned bark and pine needles, we have a warning to be ready to evac if need be.

So, from this view, it appears this is on the west (CA) side of the lake. Do you know if it's closer to Tahoe City, Homewood or S. Lake Tahoe?
its 12 miles from Squaw Valley on the west side of the granite Chief wilderness.

What sort of measures have been taken in the past to thin out the forests and cut fire-lanes to try and limit the amount of fuel available to these fires?

They dont maintain much but the area where this fire is is rugged, no roads, no way to support crews working back there other than air.

Thanks, ninthward & Rockford. I lived in the Bay Area for a while and spent quite a bit of leisure time around Lake Tahoe. I still have friends and family out there, including some in Carnelian Bay. Probably not threatened with evacuation at this point, but certainly too close for comfort.

And, to the hero who is so certain he will never need anything from anyone, you're begging God to press the "smite" key on his big computer in the sky.
