Jethro Tull is metal according to the Grammys. Anyway I don't listen to much prog but my favorite is still Ziltoid the Omniscient LINK

Some people are hating on the new Opeth, but I love it. It's basically straight up 70s prog with no real metal influence at all.

danman---maybe not the best, but that is a fantastic record. I began listening to it 25 years ago casually. A few years ago, I sat down and dropped the needle (vinyl on the Big Rig), and gave it a critical listen, and began to really get into it a bit deeper...it is a great work indeed!

Enjoy the listen...

Are we defining Progressive Rock as music with more polish, non-typical instruments or rhythms, maybe in some cases, a bit more intellectual? I never really knew the exact definition of the genre but if so I would probably nominate The Moody Blues, maybe some Frank Zappa, Emerson, Lake and Palmer perhaps?

I don't think non-typical instrumentation really matters, but time signatures, changing tempos, integration of african and asian rhythms and melodies, etc. I do think it tends to be more intellectual, and can tend to be a smidgen pretentious, but it doesn't always take itself seriously.

I think you hit the nail on the head with these. Zappa definitely does a lot more than just prog, but he is definitely prog in many ways.

As for contemporary prog rock:
Primus
Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson
Dream Theater (too prog for me)
Spock's Beard

Then you have the whole progressive metal movement.

I started a thread about Z2 recently, but no replies. I assume you didn't see it. Reviews are starting to come out, so a leak can't be far away.

Z2 Thread

I'm getting really pumped about it.

Yeah I'm hyped for it. Release date is end of October so I'm sure it will still be 3 or 4 weeks until it hits the internet.

I'm a big Tull fan, seen them twice years ago, FWIW I always liked Aqualung better but both are fantastic albums.

Would Queen fit into this prog-rock genre ?

IMHO, it is difficult to place a lot of great music in the right musical category.

Here is my take on Progressive Rock. If the music has elements of The Blues, then it's not Progressive Rock.

I say this because Blues based Rock came first. Prog Rock was distinctly different, because it was Rock music that had more Classical and Jazz elements than did Rock Music. Progressive Rock was new, it was different, it was "progressive" because it broke the paradigm of blues based Rock and Roll and Rock Music.

Pink Floyd, Jimmy Hendrix, Jethro Tull used blues based guitar music for much of their sound. I would not consider them to be Prog Rock.

Some may like my thoughts, some may disagree.

What do you folks think of this idea of mine?

I think progressive rock is more album oriented than most other genres. You're meant to listen to the full album all the way through to get maximum enjoyment rather than just listening to a few random songs here and there. Singles can work, but not as good as other genres.

Rock Music is also album oriented and blues based. The advent of FM radio helped album oriented Rock Music.

But, you are correct in that Prog Rock is album oriented and is largely devoid of classic short Top 40 singles.

Too long of songs usually for FM radio and their greed to sell us Budlight and Monster Jam
