right? it's like people are saying "I was abused so it's totally cool if other kids are!"
they don't see it as abuse because that would mean they were abused, and not many people want to admit that.

Did AP cross the line, I do not know.
I do know that as a society we need to protect our children from abusive parents. However, an arse whipping, one that made it painful to sit for days is not abuse. If it happens all the time and for no cause, then I agree it is not disciple, but abuse.
I was spanked, and have spanked my kids. My oldest more than the others. Even as a teen he laughs when talking about "trips to the barn". He knew he had it coming and still knows I did it because I love him.
Many are wanting to use this as an argument against discipline and yet it is this very lack of discipline in many homes that is responsible for many of the ills in our country.
