You can spend a lot less than that for a mid 20' travel trailer-new or used. We have 2 kids (4 and 7) and we try to go once a month. Sometimes more during football season (tailgating, campgrounds and away games).

We don't go on 2 week excursions across the country, but we do get to go on a lot of weekend trips. You can go camping for a weekend for under $100. Henderson State Park in Destin is less than $30/night and its right next to condos that are $300/night.

If you spend $30k on a trailer, you don't use all $30k. You are going to sell it after a few years (either because you don't use it or you will upgrade). You might buy it for $25k and sell it for $18k in a few years. Figure the real cost and it's a deal.
